Millet Porridge with Red Dates & Goji Dessert Recipe (Serves 2–3)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup hulled millet
  • 6–8 dried red dates (jujube), pitted if desired
  • 1–2 tbsp goji berries
  • 1–2 tbsp rock sugar or 1 tbsp rock honey (adjust to taste)
  • 4–5 cups water

Instructions

1. Rinse the millet
Place the millet in a bowl and rinse 2–3 times until the water runs mostly clear. Drain well.

2. Prepare the red dates
Rinse the dried red dates. If preferred, slice them open or remove the pits to release more flavor.

3. Start cooking
In a pot, add the rinsed millet, red dates, and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

4. Simmer gently
Once boiling, reduce to low heat. Cover partially and simmer for about 25–30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

5. Add goji berries
Add the goji berries during the last 5–10 minutes of cooking so they stay plump and vibrant.

6. Sweeten to taste
Add rock sugar and stir until dissolved. If using rock honey, add it after turning off the heat to preserve its delicate qualities.

7. Adjust consistency
Add more hot water if you prefer a thinner porridge, or simmer longer for a thicker texture.

Tips

  • For a richer texture, cook longer and stir more frequently—this releases the millet’s natural creaminess.
  • You can add a few slices of fresh ginger for warmth, especially in colder weather.
  • This porridge can be enjoyed warm for breakfast or as a light evening meal.

Effects/Benefits

Hulled Millet: Rich in magnesium and fiber, millet supports heart health, stabilizes blood sugar, and aids digestion (Taylor & Emmambux, Journal of Cereal Science, 2008).

Dried Red Dates (Jujube): Red dates are high in antioxidants and vitamin C, helping boost immunity, improve sleep, and support blood health (Gao et al., Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2013).

Goji Berries (Wolfberries): Goji berries contain polysaccharides and carotenoids that support eye health, immune function, and anti-aging effects (Amagase & Farnsworth, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2011).

Rock Sugar / Rock Honey: Rock sugar or honey provides quick energy and may help soothe the throat and reduce dryness when consumed in moderation (Bogdanov et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2008).
