Traditional Chinese Hemp Seed Dessert Drink Recipe (Serves 3–4)

Ingredients (Serves 3–4)

  • ½ cup whole unhulled hemp seeds (Huo Ma Ren / 火麻仁)
  • 2 tablespoons sweet apricot kernels (Nan Xing / 南杏), soaked 2–3 hours
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • 2–3 tablespoons yellow rock sugar, adjust to taste

Instructions

1. Gently Toast the Hemp Seeds

Place the hemp seeds into a dry wok over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the shells begin to split slightly and a rich, nutty fragrance develops. Remove from heat and let cool.

2. Prepare the Apricot Kernels

Drain the soaked apricot kernels and rinse lightly. This softens their texture and ensures a smoother blend.

3. Grind into a Milk Base

Combine the toasted hemp seeds and softened apricot kernels with 2 cups of water. Grind thoroughly (or blend at high speed) until the mixture becomes as fine and milky as possible, breaking down the shells and releasing the natural oils.

4. Extract the Smooth Liquid

Pour the mixture into a cheesecloth or fine linen bag. Twist and press firmly to extract the liquid into a bowl, leaving behind the coarse residue. For a smoother texture, strain a second time.

5. Simmer for Flavor and Texture

Transfer the strained liquid into a pot. Add the remaining 2 cups of water and bring to a gentle simmer over low heat. Stir in the rock sugar and cook until fully dissolved. Allow the drink to heat through slowly, developing a smooth, velvety consistency.

6. Serve

Serve warm for a comforting, nourishing drink, or chill for a refreshing version. Stir before serving, as natural separation may occur.

Notes

  • For an ultra-silky finish, strain twice or use a very fine cloth.
  • Adjust sweetness gradually—this drink is traditionally only lightly sweetened.
  • Best enjoyed fresh, but can be refrigerated up to 2 days.
